The film “Borg McEnroe”, which focuses on the "on and off" the court rivalry between two tennis greats Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, premiered in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, on Monday.
Björn Rune Borg, born 6 June 1956 (age 61) in Stockholm, Sweden, is a Swedish former world No. 1 tennis player
widely considered to be one of the greatest in the history of the sport. Between 1974 and 1981 he became the first
man in the Open Era to win 11 Grand Slam singles titles.
John McEnroe, born 16 February 1959 (age 58) in Germany to American parents, is an American world No.1 player, and like Bjorg, has many firsts to his credit.
The movie, starring Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason as Borg and American Shia LaBeouf as McEnroe, centers on the battle between the two in the 1980 Wimbledon men’s singles final.
That hard-fought duel, which was won by Borg in the fifth and final set, is widely considered to be one of the greatest tennis matches in history.
Borg and McEnroe were often seen as poles apart in terms of on-court personality. While Sweden’sBorg always remained calm and composed, his American rival was famed for his on-court tantrums.
The Film was premiered in Stockholm on 4 Monday, which Borg attended. The film will open to the general public in Sweden on 8 Friday and screened at the Toronto Film Festival on 7 Thursday Sept..
In Sweden and other Nordic region the film’s title will be simply “Borg”, according to the producer .
Later this month the biopic “Borg McEnroe” will open the 13th Zurich Film festival in Switzerland which has a run from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8. Sverrir Gudnason, the actor who plays Borg, and director Janus Metz Pedersen will attend the festival curtain-raiser.
The film is set for a world release in 2018.
